Matkapuhelin sai alkunsa sotilaiden radiopuhelimista 1930-luvulla. Kännykän tyyppinen solukkopuhelin alkoi kehittyä Yhdysvalloissa 1970-luvulla. Sen digitalisointi muutti puhelinta lähemmäksi pientä henkilökohtaista tietokonetta.
